Wasps invade Melbourne Backyards

Posted on: 27/03/2015

Melbourne has been invaded by wasps with unprecedented numbers flourishing in the milder weather.  The pests are attracted to areas with food and foliage and experts are warning people not to approach them.

“All of a sudden we were just inundated. It’s like we were mobbed by wasps,” Melbourne resident Marcelle Tobschall said.

Pest companies have been swamped with reports of the pests growing in numbers after a mild winter and summer.  “We’re seeing an increase in calls and honestly we can’t keep up with demand,” Simon Dixon from pest control company Exopest said.

Experts say European wasps are flourishing in Victoria. The more aggressive English wasp can also be found in and around the Dandenong Ranges.  “There seems to be an even spread in both east and west Victoria and to some degree in northern Victoria as well,” Patrick Honan from Melbourne Museum said.

The good news is, wasp season is coming to an end and numbers are expected to dwindle in a few weeks.
