Wasps invade Melbourne Backyards

Melbourne has been invaded by wasps with unprecedented numbers flourishing in the milder weather.  The pests are attracted to areas with food and foliage and experts are warning people not to approach them.

“All of a sudden we were just inundated. It’s like we were mobbed by wasps,” Melbourne resident Marcelle Tobschall said.

Pest companies have been swamped with reports of the pests growing in numbers after a mild winter and summer.  “We’re seeing an increase in calls and honestly we can’t keep up with demand,” Simon Dixon from pest control company Exopest said.   Read More

However, it soon became apparent to Professionals that these first generation bait systems had a variety of challenges and lacked flexibility.   Read more

AEPMA Life Members – Frank Bonney

It’s time to introduce the second of our amazing Life Members…..

Frank Bonney started working in the pest management industry at the age of 13, when he went to work for his uncle on his dairy farm in Gippsland.  In 1948, at the age of 20, Frank took over the running of his uncle’s South Australian farm where he became one of the first pest controllers to use an eight inch power saw to cut man-holes in the floor.

In 1953, Frank sold up his business and, along with his two brothers, he started a company called Household Pest Control (HPC).  A trip to America around this time to attend the Annual Pest Control Convention in Louisville, Kentucky taught him of new and innovative ways to run his business.   Read More

Ensystex’s Regional Director, Mr Steve Broadbent, advises, “ATTRATHOR has revolutionised cockroach control by providing a targeted film application containing Quick-release Insect Attractant Micro-capsules™ with Controlled-release Active Microcapsules™ of fipronil to give improved efficacy compared to that of gel baits and other sprays, and it is much quicker to apply.  Read more

After-hours Mischief Costs Job & The ugly truth about good faith bargaining........updates in IR

Disciplining badly behaved employees can be a pain in the ‘butt’. Especially if the matter is complicated by their actions occurring outside of work. Employers can find support though in a recent unfair dismissal case, which demonstrates that an employee’s behaviour in their own time is not necessarily immune from an employer’s sanction.

As part of work travel arrangements, an employee stayed in hotel accommodation paid for by his employer. One evening, the employee was drinking in the hotel bar after hours and groped a bar attendant’s backside. After investigating the incident, the employer found the employee had groped the bar attendant and sacked him, arguing he had brought the employer into disrepute."  Read more

Ross River virus outbreak in QLD and NSW

Health authorities have confirmed an outbreak of the mosquito-borne virus Ross River in southern Queensland and Northern NSW.

Heavy rain and high tides have been blamed for a rise in mosquito numbers and a significant increase in the number of people falling ill due to being bitten.

According to QLD and NSW Health figures – there have been 540 cases so far this year in NSW, compared to 80 cases in the same period last year.  Whereas in Queensland 380 people had been infected with the virus earlier this year, with the figure now rising to 1,000 cases since the start of the year.                      Read more
