AEPMA NSW Branch Update

Posted on: 14/12/2023

NSW Urban Pest Management Licencing
Following emails and meeting with EPA NSW regarding the problem associated with registering a person for a Pest Management trainee permit and the requirement of EPA NSW to have this person enrolled in a Pest Management course with an RTO from day 1 to be able to gain the permit. All this at considerable cost to the Pest Management business especially if the person is not suitable for the job.

We have received an email back from EPA regarding AEPMA NSW proposed probation period for new trainees. They have discussed the matter with their Director who indicated she was willing to consider the proposal, however this was dependent on all the required steps for the exemption process being met including review by their legal department. They have begun drafting the exemption for internal review and hopefully we will have more news soon.

At AEPMA NSW we are confident the EPA is sympathetic to the situation and a solution will be found soon.
We also discussed the recently introduced License endorsements and requirements for sensitive and complex operations in QLD by Queensland Health.

• CPPUPM4004 - Assess and advise on pest management options for complex operations,
• CPPUPM4006 - Implement and monitor pest management plans for complex operations,
• CPPUPM4003 - Assess and advise on pest management options for sensitive operations
• CPPUPM4005 - Implement and monitor pest management plans for sensitive operations.

It is uncertain if these units will become a requirement in NSW, but it is likely to be discussed in the Pesticide regulation 2017 is reviewed in early in 2024. EPA NSW have requested AEPMA  NSW assistance in the review.

Other topics of discussions included the recent and continuous audits of Pest Management technicians and businesses and the result of these audits (still waiting for a full Report from EPA).

We have queries from some Pest Managers regarding how long we must keep pesticide application records for. So we have put this to EPA.

Response below:
  •          Spray records must be kept for (at least) 3 years.
  •          See Clause 37 of the Pesticides Regulation 2017

Please make sure, if you have not done already, to register for the Timber Pest Management Technician (TPMT) if you want do carry out termite treatments. It is a Licencing requirement from 17 December 2023.

If you have any queries on this matter, you can call EPA NSW on 131555 or email: info@epa.nsw.gov.au

If new information becomes available we will let you know as soon as possible

We will take this opportunity on behalf of the NSW ACT State Council to wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2024.
